Sunscreen, Your New Best Friend!

Friday, June 6, 2014

Ok, so today I'm going to share something that's a bit embarrassing....

Don't judge.... ok maybe judge a little cause I kinda deserve it...

Let me start by saying I grew up in Southern California... so I've been to the beach a time or 2, used to being in the sun, right!?

Well I thought so too until last weekend. (cue dramatic music!)

My husband and I went to the beach with some friends for the day..... perfect beach day. Sun shining, water packed with kids and surfers... amazing.

Until I got home and looked in the mirror only to see a lobster looking back at me. I got so incredibly sun burned, its not even funny.

Well didn't you put sunscreen on, one might ask. Oh yea, I sure did. However, the sunscreen I grabbed had probably been sitting in my cabinet for a long time.... we have this random collection of half empty sunscreens ranging from all SPF's that have ended up at our house some way or another. Anyways my point being, yes I put sunscreen on ( go me!) but made the HUGE mistake of not looking at the expiration or reapplying as much as I should have. Yea, that's right, sunscreen expires and one application is not going to cut it for the whole day!

The up side? I was wearing a hat (a beach must in my opinion) and a solid slather of sunscreen on my face so it was spared from this disaster! Thank goodness... Can you imagine the damage that kind of UV exposure would do to your face!? Holy wrinkles at 28.

So after this painful experience, I thought I would share a few common sunscreen "mistakes" you might be making.

  • You have been using the same bottle for the last 3 summers. I touched on this before but expiration does matter when it comes to your sunscreen. The longer it sits, the more time the active ingredient has to deteriorate, which makes the protection you think you are getting less and less effective. Also, how you store it matters. Shoving it in your glove compartment or leaving it in your hot car can dull the effectiveness. While it may seem convenient to have it in your car at all times, the high temperatures may be messing with your coverage.
  • You only use a small dab. This is probably something most everyone is guilty of at some point. Make sure you are using enough to evenly cover your entire body. Simple as that.
  • You put your sunscreen on at the beginning of the day, but then forget to do it again. A general rule for re-applying is every 2 hours if your in the sun. That time can be cut down if swimming and/or sweating. So be sure to reapply more often if swimming or sweating, giving the sunscreen several minutes to soak in before going back into the water.
  • You count on the word "waterproof" when swimming.  So really, there is no such thing as a "waterproof" sunscreen. Its actually water resistant.... for up to 40 to 80 minutes. After that, REAPPLY!
  • The higher the SPF, the longer the wear and higher the coverage. So you think SPF 60 will be twice as protective and last twice as long? Not so much. Experts recommend an SPF of at least 30. When applied correctly, 30 will block about 96% of UVB rays. From there, the higher the SPF, the blocked rays percentage only goes up very slightly. It won't change the amount of time between when you will need to reapply.
  • The SPF in your makeup is enough. A lot of women think, "Awesome, my foundation has SPF in it, I'm all set!". Not the case ladies, Think about the amount of foundation you apply compared to the amount of sunscreen you would slather on your face. Chances are, those 2 amounts are very different. Plus makeup tends to wear off throughout the day so putting on an extra layer of actual sunscreen on before the rest of your makeup is always a good idea!
So, enjoy the sun but be smart about it. You want to take care of that beautiful skin of yours right? I mean who wants to look like the lady from Something about Mary!?

Trend to Try: White Out

Thursday, April 3, 2014

I want to start by saying, I LOVE WHITE!

White shoes, nails, pants, whatever....Even home decor. I love this all white errything trend for spring/summer.

It just screams minimalist hotness.

I personally can't wait to rock this look.... but maybe after I get a lovely golden glow (self tan, of course!).  And clearly I will be accenting my all white looks with gold accessories, since I'm obsessed as you probably already figured out.

1// I couldn't be more obsessed with these Lace Bell Pants (sold out but similar and more cost friendly HERE)

2// White cut-out booties. The light color makes these an easy wear for spring. Pair them with a cute dress  or shorts and kimono top.

3// Nasty Gal Cross My Heart Jumpsuit.... Umm, White hot with a daring cut out. And I love that its a pantsuit instead of a maxi dress. So on trend!

4// This head wrap is perfect to throw on for an easy bohemian look.

5// How cute is this crochet trimmed top from O'Neill!? The strap are removable so you can wear it strapless if you feel like it. I have this in black and love it!

6// White nails are so hot right now. They stand out but still look classic and clean.

7// And of course, a great white strappy sandal is a must this spring/summer!

How will you wear this white hot trend? I would love to see what you guys come up with!

Kissable Lips

Friday, February 7, 2014

Alright, so I'm just going to say it, I have terrible lips! Not terrible as in thin or weird or anything.... Terrible as in they are so dry, cracked and flaky. Boo! Because of that, lip scrubs are my best friend.

Here is a recipe for a simple homemade lip scrub that I love. I probably use it at least once a week if not more. Plus the ingredients are so easy, you probably already have them in your kitchen. Love that, right!?

Here's what you do:

+ 1tbs brown sugar
+ 1tbs olive oil
+ 1/2 tsp honey

Mix all ingredients together is a small container. Scrub mixture onto lips gently. Rinse and apply a generous layer of your fav lip balm. Simple as that and you have soft, totally kissable lips! Now get out there and smooch away ;)

Revlon Favs

Friday, October 25, 2013

Happy friday everyone!! What are the plans for the weekend? My hubby and I are headed to vegas tomorrow for the Life is Beautiful music and food festival. Can't wait to listen to some awesome bands and taste some amazing food and drinks from all the featured chefs that will be there.

I stopped by CVS to grab a few things this afternoon, and came across this awesome new nail polish that I had to try! Its the Revlon Scented Nail Enamel and its so cool! I wasn't sure about it cause I was thinking 'how can a nail polish, which usually smells so yucky, smell like (in my case) Wild Violets!?'. But let me tell you, it totally smells like violets once its dry! Pretty cool :) They have several colors/scents to choose from also.

Another Revlon purchase that I'm loving is the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain. These are perfect for me cause my lips have NO color to begin with so I always have to wear something but then they are always super dry as well! This  balm solves both problems….. it keeps my lips "kissable" ;) with the balm but the color stays for a super long time with the stain. Its amazing! I bought it in 3 different colors…. Romantic (red), Sweetheart (in the photos above), and Lovesick (another shade of pink).

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!! Enjoy!

Fall Hair Trend: Undone Texture

Monday, October 7, 2013

This effortlessly gorgeous look is a must try this fall. Slightly straight, slightly wavy but the perfect go-to. If you have straighter hair, try scrunching in a salt spray for some boost of texture. For that sexy beachy look, wrap hair around a large curling iron switching up the direction of curls to keep the wave pattern relaxed. Leave the ends semi-straight for a carefree feel. The best part about this look? You can pull it off with any length hair....short, medium, or long! Try it for a glam night out or just a casual day running errands.

Fall Hair Trend: Low Ponytails

Tuesday, October 1, 2013

Boho

Glam

Loose

Flirty

Dressy

Low ponytails are a fun way to take a sporty classic and turn it into a sophisticated fall look. Make this look ultra glam and sexy by creating a precise middle part and tons of shine. Flirt a little by letting shorter pieces fall freely around your face. Dress it up with a tight and smooth, polished pony. Let your free spirit fly (you know I love this!) with a loose side braid pulled back at the nape of the neck. Add a flower for an extra kick of boho! Try 'em all and mix it with this fun fall trend.

Fall Hair Trend: Straight

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Straight hair is a classic look that looks great at all lengths. For fall, try the straight trend for a simple and sleek look. Add some extra shine to pin straight hair for a polished finish or more movement for a flirty, natural looking 'do.

To get super sleek, pin straight locks, try a deep conditioning treatment before hand to get gorgeous shine and minimize the look for dry, split ends. Then blow dry straight and run a flat iron down your tresses. Finish with a shine spray.

It's simple and sexy!

Fall Hair Trend: Deep Side Part

Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Pair a deep side part with soft waves for a classic look.

... or let the curls be wild and free!

Tease the crown and sweep bangs to the side.

Get a fresh faced look by pushing hair off your face.

Slick back by smoothing out the top and tucking behind your ears. Leave the rest soft and touchable.

Give your deep side part an edgy twist by braiding one side back.

I'm loving this deep side part trend for fall. I normally part my hair straight down the middle so switching to a deep side part is an easy and quick way to freshen up my look.

Not sure how deep to go? Use your brow as a guide..... Divide hair directly above the arch of your brow. Then just decide what look you want to go for; Classic, Slicked back, Fresh faced, Volume, or Edgy. So many possibilities to try and enjoy this season!

Fall Hair Trend: Braids

Friday, September 13, 2013

Milkmaid

Side Braid

Fishtail Braid

Small Front Braid

Single, long Braid

Halo Braid

Fall is approaching..... OK well maybe the weather here in So-Cal isn't reflecting it but I thought I would post about a few fall hair trends I'm seeing, the first being Braids! I'm loving this trend and have been trying all different ways recently. This is a perfect style for second or third (if you can make it that long) day hair. A trick for making your braid look thicker?? After you create your braid, place the elastic a bit lower than where you stopped braiding. Place one hand holding the braid at the elastic and use the other hand to pull gently on small pieces throughout the braid to "fluff" it up. You can also add some clip in extensions to thicken up the braid, no matter how thick your own hair is!

Hope you all had a great week and are ready for the weekend! :) Have fun!

Wedding Beauty: Hair

Monday, January 28, 2013

Following up my earlier post about my wedding day make-up inspiration, here is some hair inspiration!

Again, I want my hair to look natural and "like me".
Although up-do's can look great on some people, I'm not a huge fan of that for myself on my big day. I wear my hair down and loose curls most days, so that seems to be the style I'm leaning towards. Plus, not giving away too much detail, I have a gorgeous headpiece to wear in my hair for the wedding.

Here is some of the inspiration I've found for hair.

Long and curly with volume on top.

Love, love, love these wavy curls!

Awesome headpiece placement!

Maybe pull half back??

Please feel free to share any ideas you may have for wedding day hair!

Wedding Beauty: Make-up

With our wedding just 4 months away, I am starting to seriously look into some makeup and hair inspiration. I have found so many gorgeous looks on Pinterest, it's been really helpful!

I want to keep my makeup similar to my everyday style but with a little more GLAM since, after all, it is my wedding day and the photos will last a lifetime! I want to still look like myself when I look back at all the pictures. I am very lucky to have one of my best friends and bridesmaid, Alexis, helping me get dolled up on the big day. She is such an amazingly talented makeup artist and hair stylist. I know she will do a stunning job making sure I look my best!

Here are some of the inspiration pics I've pulled.

Soft and Sweet!

Victoria's Secret glam!

Gorgeous and simple

What do you guys think?
Let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions!

Try it out and see if this hot color is right for you this fall!
